All Through the Night

  Welsh folk song
English lyrics, Harold Boulton

Arranged by Elizabeth DiPietri, 2008

The music for this song is derived from an old Welsh folk tune entitled Ar Hyd y Nos. The composer is unknown, however the music notation was first published in 1784 in a book written by Edward Jones, entitled "Musical and Poetical Relics of the Welsh Bards". The Welsh lyrics, however, are by John Ceinog Hughes, date unknown.

As the best-known of all Welsh folk songs, this has become a standard on the concert stage, and with men's choirs for the past century. Over the years, the words were "translated" into several languages, including English, sometimes in more than one version. One English version begins, "Sleep my love", another starts with "Sleep my child". The latter is a lullaby, and these are the lyrics Elizabeth chose to include in honor of the impending (August) birth of her first grandchild, a girl, who will be named Kayleigh Marie.

Guardian Angels

No evil shall befall you, nor shall affliction come near your tent, for to His Angels God has given command about you, that they guard you in all your ways. Upon their hands they will bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone.
Psalm 91: 10-12
