By the Light of the Silvery Moon

Music: Gus Edwards (1879-1945)
Lyrics: Edward Madden (1878-1952)
Arr: Merv Rowley ©2008

By 1909, ragtime music had evolved from the venues of minstrel shows and bordellos to become an accepted musical art form, together with “blues”, as a unique type of syncopated American pop music. Composers of  popular songs had adopted this musical form both for dance tunes and love refrains. By the Light of the Silvery Moon is the prototype of a long series of songs which related love to the month of June with such terms as “moon, spoon, croon, tune and soon”.

Both the composer and lyricist of this music were successful professionals, who were both inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Details of their careers and accomplishments are listed in the Historical Links below.

This is a bouncy, toe-tapping tune with an infectious tendency to enthuse the listener to sing along with the music. The syncopation results from the numerous couplets of dotted eighth and sixteenth notes. There are 43 chords required, including 14 different forms:

A, Amaj7, Bm, B7, B9, D, E, Ebdim, E7, F#, F#m, F#7, Gdim and G#m.

Readers are reminded that our tablature arrangements include the playing of both melody and chord accompaniment on a single dulcimer, as shown. By following the tablature it is not necessary to learn or memorize such chords by name... just play! We list the chord names for information purposes only, to demonstrate the capabilities of the 1-3-5 tuning to produce a wide variety of "color chords" not generally available in other tunings.

Believe it or not, this one is easy to play after a little practice. It’s sure to be a hit. Enjoy!

Your 1-3-5 team
