Archived mountain dulcimer tablature arrangement in the 1-3-5 tuning - Down by the Old Mill Stream

Down By the Old Mill Stream

Composed and Published by Tell Taylor

Although this was the only song of record ever written by this composer, it was a great hit, and sold more than five million copies of sheet music in its day. It was published the same year as several other popular tunes such as Let Me Call You Sweetheart, Some of These Days, and Victor Herbert’s operetta Naughty Marietta.  The composer had the foresight to establish his own publishing house in Chicago, called Tell Taylor – Music Publisher.

Most generations remember only the chorus of this song, played and sung as a slow waltz. It has been one of the classic tunes sung by barbershop quartets for many generations, in four-part harmony. Both the melody and accompaniment require the use of chromatic notes. Notice that the introductory verses are included in this arrangement, adding to the story of a couple having grown old together. This portion of the music is written in a 4/4 time signature, shifting to 3/4 for the chorus.

In the tab, melody notes are indicated by bold face numbers while “fill” notes are indicated by plain face numbers.  Beginners can ignore the plain face numbers, if so desired.
