Brewster Higley and Daniel Kelley

Lyrics: Brewster M. Higley, M.D.

Music: Daniel E. Kelley

          Arr: Merv Rowley/Ruth Randle, 2013

In 1873 the December issue of the Smith County Pioneer published a poem which was titled “Oh Give Me A Home Where the Buffalo Roam” – or maybe it was “My Western Home” – it depends which research article you are reading, what the title was. Anyhow, although not identical to the words we know today, this song became the familiar “Home On the Range” – which is our free tab offering to you this month. The poem was written by Dr. Brewster M. Higley who lived in western Kansas at the time. He showed the verses to a friend – Daniel E. Kelly – who was a member of the Harlan Brother orchestra. Daniel liked the words so much that he composed music for the poem, and wrote it down on a piece of wrapping paper. He showed it to his in-laws – the Harlans – who thought it was really good, and decided to introduce it at a dance. So the first public playing of it was at a Friday night dance. It was a hit from the beginning, and spread far and wide. Franklin Delano Roosevelt said it was his favorite song. It has been sung or played in many movies, tv shows, and cartoons. On June 30, 1947 a bill was passed in the State Senate of Kansas making it the official song of the state of Kansas.
