I'll Take You Home Again, Kathleen

Words & Music: Thomas Westendorf
Arr: Merv Rowley ©2003

It’s March again, and once more we have selected Irish music for our tablature selection. This one is of American origin, entitled I’ll Take You Home Again, Kathleen. The composer was an elementary school teacher who lived in the small town of Plainfield, Indiana.

I'll Take You Home Again, Kathleen is what is known as a "companion song" - written as a response to another song. (See lyrics below.) Westendorf  wrote it as a response to George W. Persley's song Barney, Take Me Home Again. Persley, a frequent collaborator with Westendorf, had dedicated Barney to Westendorf, who then wrote Kathleen even before Barney was actually published. I’ll Take You Home Again, Kathleen was published in 1876 by John Church & Co. of Cincinnati, Ohio.

Westendorf became one of the most prolific songwriters of the period, writing words for other songwriters (especially Persley) as well as for his own songs, although Kathleen remained his "monument".

In spite of its inauspicious beginnings, the song has a reputation as one of the most beautiful harmonies ever written. At one point it was the favorite of such famous personages as Thomas Edison and Henry Ford.

The companion song lyrics for Barney, Take Me Home Again

music: George Persley, lyrics: Arthur French

1. Oh, Barney dear, I'd give the world

To see my home across the sea,

Where all the days were joy impearled,

Before I went to roam with thee.

I long beneath its roof to rest,

Where never comes a care or pain,

In all the earth it is the best -

Oh, Barney, take me home again.

Oh, take me home, yes, take me home,

To where my heart will know no pain.

I'll go with thee across the sea,

Oh, Barney, take me home again.

2. Oh, Barney dear, in happy dreams

I live once more the dear old days,

By flow'ry dells and sun-kissed streams,

Sweet recollection fondly strays.

I see each well-remembered face,

And hear their voices' glad refrain,

As memory its steps retrace -

Oh, Barney, take me home again.

3. Oh, Barney dear, why did we roam

To seek a fortune in the west,

When love and peace in that old home

Were better far than all the rest.

For what is fame, and wealth, and all,

When life is dark with care or pain;

The past is far beyond recall -

Oh, Barney, take me home again.
