“In the Garden”

By: Charles Austin Miles (1868-1946)

Arr: Ruth Randle

The composer of this beautiful, well-known hymn began his career as a pharmacist. Shortly thereafter, Charles A. Miles wrote his first gospel music, published by the Hall-Mack Company. In 1892 Miles abandoned his earlier career, joining this publishing house as an editor, and later Manager. During the ensuing 37 years, he wrote and published nearly a score of gospel songs, convinced this was his true calling. In the Garden is perhaps his best-remembered composition.

The lyrics for this music are based upon a New Testament passage in the Bible (John 20:15), describing the experience of Mary Magdalene at the tomb of the newly risen Christ, in a garden setting.

Thinking He was the gardener, she said:

“Sir, if you have carried Him away,

tell me where you have put Him,

and I will get Him.”

The melody of this song is diatonic, with the exception of one note appearing in measure 24, an F-natural. Ruth has used two additional chromatic notes here for chord support. These may be found in measure 14 (an E chord using the note G#), and in measure 28 (an F#7 chord requiring an A#).

An additional benefit provided by the 1-3-5 tuning in this arrangement is the vertical alignment of notes as barre chords. Notice that the entire arrangement can thus be chorded with a minimum stretch of the fingers, while retaining the full-richness of sound of the triad chords.
