Closer Walk With Thee
Arranged by: John Sackenheim ©2011
Just A Closer Walk With
Thee is one of the most recognized traditional gospel hymns in America. It is in the public domain. The composer of the tune and when it was written is unknown. All that is really known of it's origin is that it became nationally known in American music in the 1930's during the period when music conventions were popular in the churches of America. Southern Gospel groups began picking up the song in the 1940's.
The first known recording was by the Selah Jubilee
Singers in 1941. In 1950, it was a million-seller for Red Foley. Artists such as Patsy Cline, Elvis Presley, and Anne Murray have recorded it, and the list
goes on and on. By the end of the 1970s, more than a hundred artists had recorded the song and the list of artists
has continued to grow since then.
Just a Closer Walk With Thee is performed as either an instrumental or
vocal, and is one of the most frequently played tunes in traditional New Orleans jazz funerals.
It is presented here in the 1-3-5 tuning for the mountain dulcimer. Enjoy!
About the Music
Notice that, although we are using a D-F#-A tuning, the music is played in the key of
A. This permits the color chord E7 (1/1/3) to be used. Although less colorful, the music might also be played in the key of B, using the color chord F#7
Yes, the key of B has 5 sharps...#####.
Incidentally, the music cannot be played in D. Yes, 1-3-5 tunings are full of surprises.
