Little Brown Jug

Composer: R.A. Eastburn (Joseph Winner)

Arr: Ruth Randle (2008)

Although often listed as an American folk song, Little Brown Jug has known origins. Its publication in 1869 (Lee & Wilker, 545 N.Eighth St., Philadelphia, PA) came during the “reconstruction” period following the Civil War while the economy was in turmoil. The music was written as a brisk polka, with a theme intended to be amusing. It preceded the Tin Pan Alley era by some 20 years, and no doubt got most of its early exposure by the traveling minstrel shows of the day.

Like other music of the period, it was written under a pen-name. The actual composer was Joseph Winner, a younger brother of Septimus Winner (Listen to the Mockingbird, Whispering Hope).  Interestingly, during WWII, this music was resurrected by the well-known big-band leader, Glenn Miller, and Little Brown Jug became an American swing tune remembered by Americans who danced to it during the 1940’s.

Ruth has arranged this selection in the keys of both D and A, together with the usual notation/tab and sound files. Enjoy!
