Meet Me Tonight in Dreamland

(1909)

Composer:  Leo Friedman

Lyricist: Beth Whitson

Arranged by: Merv Rowley

Of the thousands of Tin Pan Alley Tunes written between 1890-1910, fewer than 100 ever reached the level of total sales of one million copies!  This month's selection not only achieved that sales level, but was written by two virtually unknown authors - on their first attempt! Being amateurs, they were fleeced of any royalties for these sales, having sold the copyright for a cash settlement. Before wasting tears for these writers, however, we should note that the following year, they again teamed together to write an even better-known favorite, Let Me Call You Sweetheart. This time they did receive royalties, and the two tunes combined went on to gross over 10 million copies in sales! The two youngsters apparently then retired from songwriting as millionaires.

Merv first arranged this song in 1-3-5 tuning in 2003, when it appeared in his book, Songs America Loved. His arrangement includes just the familiar chorus; its lovely melody stands alone. As with so many songs of this era, the  rather (we think) unremarkable verses have slipped into obscurity, the chorus becoming what people remember as "the song". You can find below, a link to the full score.

 About the Music

Readers should find this beautiful, dreamy melody rather easy to play. The unique, almost startling thing you will encounter is the rich tone of the B+ (augmented) chord you will hear on the second syllable of the word “tonight” in the second measure. This is the first time, other than Mighty Like a Rose, that we encounter such a modern chord sound. The 0/1/5 (Db5) may be a bit of a stretch for some. Enjoy!
