My Gal Sal
(1905)

Composer: Paul Dresser
Arr: Merv Rowley/Ruth Randle, 2014

Paul Dresser was a native of Indiana, born in 1857 in Terre Haute. He was one of the well-known songwriters of the early Tin Pan Alley era, known for his sentimental music. Although he wrote numerous songs, this month's selection, My Gal Sal, along with On the Banks of the Wabash Far Away (archived on this site as well) are ranked as his best. They are well-known and still favorites of Barbershop Quartets today.

As with so many of the songs from this era, the verses soon faded into semi-obscurity, and the chorus became known as the song itself, My Gal Sal. (Ruth enjoys seeking out these lesser-known verses and arranging them as a matter of historical interest.) You may choose to play either the entire song or just the chorus.

Merv first taught a 1-3-5 workshop at a Wisconsin Dulcimer Festival in 2002, using "My Gal Sal" as the music, with a huge attendance. Now, 12 years later, we hope this great old standard will bring the same pleasure and interest.

At the bottom of page 1, you will find a couple of chords that use the 1+ fret - if you don't have one, don't worry - just play it without that note.
