Say It With
Composer: Irving Berlin
Arr: Merv Rowley
Our arrangement for this month is
Say it With Music, by the renowned American composer and lyricist Irving Berlin. This is one of nearly 1500 compositions he wrote in his lifetime (101 years). Perhaps the greatest tribute one can receive is from his peers: Gershwin wrote that Irving Berlin was
"the greatest composer of all time". Jerome Kern stated that "Irving Berlin has no place in American music...he IS American music". With that brief
introduction, we refer you to the link below for a full historical review of the composer and his works.
This month's music was featured in a 1921 Broadway production Berlin produced, entitled
Music Box Revue (one of nineteen such works he
produced). Berlin was also a prominent music publisher and wrote scores for numerous movies. Before his death, he received a Congressional award, presented by President Dwight Eisenhower, for his music,
God Bless America. We hope you enjoy this month's selection.
