You're the Flower of My Heart,

Sweet Adeline

Music: Harry Armstrong
Lyrics: R. H. Gerard
Arr: Merv Rowley ©2007

The most popular theme of American songwriters has always been romantic love ballads, using a girl’s name for a title. During the 19th century alone we can recall such favorites as Cindy, Sweet Genevieve, Aura Lee, Sweet Evelina, Peggy O’Neil, Juanita, and a host of others. Thus, it was not unusual when the team of Armstrong and Gerard published a tune about Sweet Adeline in 1903.

This was a first effort for both men. Armstrong had composed the music seven years earlier, when he was only eighteen, and Gerard wrote the lyrics and title, initially called You’re the Flower of My Heart, Sweet Rosalie. Publishers insisted on a title change, and thus Adeline came into being. Even then, popularity lagged until the song was sung by a quartet of male singers who had adopted a new style of singing in close harmony, known as “barbershop quartet singing”. This bit of serendipity led to fame and fortune for the writers and for the song itself, which was eventually adopted as a standard for performances and competition by barbershop groups down through the years. Female singing groups of such music are known today as “Sweet Adelines”.  See the Historical Links below for further information about the song and the singing style that made it famous.

Our dulcimer arrangement of this song makes no pretense of duplicating the close harmony of the quartet vocal singing. Here we have shown the lyrics, melody line and various color chords, using the chromatic notes of the 1-3-5 tuning to illustrate what the song sounds like.
