We Gather Together

Netherlands folk hymn, 1597
Music: Edouard Kremser, 1877
English lyrics: Theodore Baker, 1894

Arr. Ruth Randle, 2008

We owe our thanks to the early Dutch settlers of Nieuw Amsterdam (now New York) for this well-known hymn of thanksgiving.  New Amsterdam was founded by the Dutch as a trading post in 1625, only five years after the Puritans had arrived in Plymouth, on the Mayflower. It became a permanent white settlement the following year after the island of Manhattan was purchased from the Algonquin Indian tribe for trinkets valued at 60 Dutch guilders.

These settlers had brought their culture of songs and dances with them from their native Netherlands. Their Thanksgiving Day was one of religious observance, with gratitude for the bounties of their labor and harvests. History tells us that the same spirit of thanks pervaded the minds of the Puritans in New England, who began observing Thanksgiving as early as 1621. It was not until 1863, however, that President Abraham Lincoln first proposed a national observance of Thanksgiving Day. All presidents since have continued such proclamations.

Ruth has arranged this hymn in 1-3-5 (with three verses of lyrics for your singing pleasure). The chord forms are uncomplicated and easy to play. We believe all will enjoy this holiday music of America.
