(Casey Would Waltz With the Strawberry Blonde and)
The Band Played On
(1895)

Lyrics: John F. Palmer
Music: Charles B. Ward
Arr: Ruth Randle/Merv Rowley 2012

This month's selection, The Band Played On, is among the list of America's top favorites. Most of us remember it as Casey Would Waltz With a Strawberry Blonde... the opening words of the chorus. Its introductory lyrics are written in 2/4 (march tempo) and its refrain is in 3/4 (waltz time). These features, plus its three verses of lyrics, add up to three pages of bouncy music and exuberance that have made it a long-time favorite dance tune for 120 years.

We selected this tune for March because Casey was IRISH, begorra, and a "son of the auld sod". You'll love playing this selection, we're sure. Play the verses with a bit of syncopation or "swing", and watch for the rhythm change between verse and chorus - listen to the MIDI file and you'll hear what I mean.
