Music: E. Van Alstyne

We have been asked how we go about selecting music for our
website. That is not an easy question to answer in a few words. Of
course, above all it should lend itself to a dulcimer
arrangement in playable fashion, and have an interesting theme. We favor music
with interesting chords that demonstrate the advantages of
available chromatic notes. Beyond that, we look for variety, interesting themes,
lyrics that are not offensive or in bad taste.
More difficult to find are melodies that "fit" lyrics, and vice-versa. Many lack quality in one
way or another. In regard to lyrics, we have found many examples where the words of introduction
(verse /introductory lyrics) add little or nothing to the tune.
Possibly this is because there are few good poets who are lyricists. We feel we have chosen an excellent example of quality music in this month's selection,
It was written by a team of two seasoned veterans.
Egbert Van Alstyne was a 15-year veteran of song-writing, and his
partner Gustav (Gus) Kahn was outstanding as a lyricist, having worked with Gershwin and other notable composers.
Have you ever found yourself lost in daydreams about fond recollections of
your past life? Here,
our composers have combined a nostalgic combination of melody and lyrics
to which all can relate. We hope you will enjoy Memories, and play it often.
notes: if you have problems reaching the 0/1/5 D(b5)
chord, just play the melody note (5).
